Enrollment Requirements

Before scheduling your Meet & Greet, please review the following Enrollment Requirements and FAQs below.

Social Temperament

Social Temperament

Social Temperament

Tanner’s is a social daycare and boarding facility. Dogs must be comfortable interacting with other dogs and able to safely participate in appropriately matched playgroups.

Crate Comfort

Social Temperament

Social Temperament

All dogs take scheduled rest breaks throughout the day in individual, appropriately sized crates (or private suites for boarding). These breaks give dogs time to relax and recharge between activity and help prevent overstimulation. Dogs must be comfortable resting quietly during scheduled downtime.

Age Requirement

Social Temperament

Weight Requirement

Puppies must be at least 8 weeks old and current on all age-appropriate vaccinations before attending Tanner's.

If your dog is 12 years of age or older, please contact our office to discuss whether Tanner's is the right fit.

Existing clients are re-evaluated upon turning 12 years old to ensure participation remains appropriate for their health, comfort, and safety.

Weight Requirement

Spay & Neuter Policy

Weight Requirement

Dogs must weigh a minimum of 8 pounds to attend Tanner's.

Puppies expected to exceed 8 pounds may complete a Meet & Greet, but cannot begin Evaluation Days until they reach the minimum weight requirement.

Please note: veterinary invoices or receipts cannot be accepted as proof of vaccination unless they clearly include the vaccine name and expiration date.

Frequently Asked Questions

What vaccinations does my dog need to have?

Dogs must be current on all age-appropriate required vaccinations, including Rabies, Distemper and Bordetella vaccinations before attending Tanner’s. Records must clearly show the vaccine name and expiration date and should be uploaded directly to your account.

Veterinary invoices or receipts cannot be accepted unless they clearly include the vaccine name and expiration date.

Does my dog need an Evaluation?

Yes. All new dogs must successfully complete all three Evaluation Days before participating in daycare, boarding, training, or spa services.

Evaluation Day One introduces your dog gradually to our environment, team and compatible dogs. Days Two and Three are longer visits designed to help your dog acclimate to Tanner’s daily routine while our team continues observing their comfort, interactions, play style and ability to settle between activity.

Dogs returning after 6+ months away from daycare or 3+ months away from boarding require a re-evaluation. Additional Evaluation Days after a re-evaluation are scheduled only if our team determines they would be helpful.

Learn more about Evaluation Days and Getting Started

What happens if my dog is uncomfortable during an Evaluation Day?

Every dog adjusts differently to a new environment, and some initial uncertainty can be completely normal. Our evaluation process uses gradual introductions, structured transitions and scheduled rest periods to give dogs time to become comfortable at their own pace.

If your dog appears overly stressed, is unable to settle, or is not comfortable participating, our team may slow the introduction process, shorten the visit and contact you for early pickup. We’ll review what we observed with you and discuss the best next step for your dog.

Depending on their individual needs, we may recommend taking a break and trying again at a later time, additional training support, private training at Tanner’s, in-home training, or another approach to help build confidence and comfort. Tanner’s offers private and in-home training options for dogs who may need support outside of group play.

In some cases, if a dog continues to show significant stress, unsafe interactions, aggression, or cannot be safely handled by our staff, Tanner’s group daycare and boarding environment may not be the right fit. Our goal is always to recommend the option that best supports the individual dog while keeping all dogs and staff safe.

Does my dog need to be comfortable resting in a crate?

Yes. Scheduled rest is an important part of the daycare routine at Tanner’s. Dogs take breaks between play sessions in individual, appropriately sized crates within our climate controlled indoor space. These rest periods give dogs time to relax and recharge and help prevent overstimulation throughout the day.

For boarding, dogs rest in their private suites rather than daycare crates.

Does my puppy need to complete training before joining daycare?

Puppies six months of age and younger entering Tanner’s daycare are required to complete our six-session Puppy Preschool program after successfully completing their Meet & Greet and Evaluation Days.

Puppy Preschool is designed to help young puppies build the foundation, routine and handler skills needed to transition successfully into regular daycare.

Dogs older than six months may also be required to complete additional training support if our team determines during the Evaluation Process that it would help them participate safely and successfully in our daycare environment.

Please note enrolling in the Puppy Kindergarten program fulfills this Puppy Preschool requirement. SEE TRAINING PROGRAMS

My puppy already works with a trainer. Do they still need Preschool?

Yes. We’re always happy to hear that families are already investing in their puppy’s training. Puppy Preschool is still required because it focuses specifically on helping young dogs succeed within the Tanner’s daycare environment. That involves learning our routines, working with our handlers, settling between activity, transitioning appropriately and building the skills needed for group care.

Preschool can complement the training your puppy is already receiving elsewhere. Families who would like to continue training with Tanner’s can also choose Puppy Kindergarten, Middle School, Private Training or other age appropriate training programs as their puppy grows.

What happens during inclement or extreme weather?

During heavy rain, snow, extreme heat or cold, outdoor time may be shortened to potty breaks and dogs will enjoy play and activity in our temperature controlled indoor spaces. We adjust each day based on conditions to help keep dogs safe and comfortable.

In severe weather, Tanner’s may open up to two hours late, close up to two hours early, or close daycare and other daytime services for the day. Families with reservations will be contacted directly with any schedule changes.

Boarding dogs will continue to receive full care from our on-site team, including feeding, medications, potty breaks, play and rest, even when the facility is closed to the public.

Can I book last minute overnight care?

Because new boarding clients must first complete a Meet & Greet, the evaluation process required by our team, and at least one full day of daycare, Tanner’s cannot accommodate last minute first time boarding reservations.

Existing clients may contact our office to check availability. Boarding can fill quickly during busy periods, so advanced reservations are recommended.

Dogs who have not boarded at Tanner’s within the past 3 months require a RE-EVALUATION before returning.

Before your dog returns, please review our ENROLLMENT REQUIREMENTS and make sure current vaccination records are uploaded to your account.

What do I need to bring when my dog is boarding?

Please bring your dog’s leash and pre-portioned meals. Each meal should be packaged individually and labeled with your dog’s name. If all meals are the same, there’s no need to label them by day or time. A $15 convenience fee applies if meals are not individually packaged.

Aside from their leash and food, nothing else is required. You’re welcome to bring a bed, blanket, treats or an approved comfort item from home. For safety, please do not bring balls or small toys for your dog’s suite.

There’s no need to bring food or water bowls. Tanner’s provides sanitized stainless-steel bowls, including slow feeders when appropriate.

If your dog’s food is forgotten or runs out during their stay, our team can help arrange meals at an additional cost. House Food is also available if needed.

If your dog takes medication, please bring it with clear administration instructions and any familiar food aids needed, such as pill pockets.

Do you have set drop-off and pickup times?

Daycare: Dogs may be dropped off and picked up anytime between 7:00 AM and 7:00 PM Monday through Friday and 8:00 AM and 6:00 PM Saturday and Sunday.

Boarding: Drop-off is between 2:00 PM and 5:00 PM on the day of arrival, and check-out is between 9:00 AM and 12:00 PM on the day of departure.

A $40 early check-in fee applies to arrivals between opening and 12:30 PM, and a $40 late checkout fee applies to pickups between 1:30 PM and closing.

No drop-off or pick-up is available from 12:30 PM-1:30 PM while Tanner’s closes for daily Rest & Reset.

Our facility closes promptly at 7:00 PM on weekdays and 6:00 PM on weekends. If you are unable to arrive before closing, your dog will remain with us for overnight boarding. Applicable boarding and house food charges will be added.

Do you have security cameras?

Yes. Tanner’s uses security cameras throughout our indoor and outdoor areas to help monitor the dogs, facility and team. Camera footage is for internal safety and monitoring purposes and is not available for public viewing or livestream access.

Boarding families receive photos during their dog’s stay.

Can Tanner’s ever discontinue services for my dog?

For the safety, comfort and well being of every dog and staff member, Tanner’s may discontinue or modify services if a dog’s needs or behavior are no longer appropriate for our environment. This may include unsafe behavior, ongoing high levels of anxiety or stress, difficulty being safely handled or managed, or behavior that significantly disrupts the group environment.

Dogs’ needs, comfort levels and social preferences can also change over time. If we notice a change, our team will discuss what we’re seeing with you and, when appropriate, may recommend additional training, modified care or another service option better suited to your dog’s needs. Dogs over Tanner’s 12-year age guideline may also be re-evaluated to determine whether continued participation remains appropriate for their comfort, health and safety.

All decisions are made by our trained team with the safety and well being of the individual dog, the other dogs in our care and our staff in mind.

Have you ever said: "I'LL NEVER BOARD MY DOG!" Then Tanner's is the place for you.

Tanner's Canine Resort in Bergen County gives you peace of mind & a guilt-free vacation.
